Later at home, Chloe scrubbed a paint smear off the back of her arm and stepped out of the shower. She rubbed her skin with a scented lotion that was new. Watermelon Kiwi. She had hesitated buying it, afraid she’d smell like a fruit salad. But when she had dabbed it on her wrist to try, it had a faint musky rose fragrance. Surprisingly pleasant. It wasn’t until after that she worried it might smell like a moldy fruit salad. Love me, love my masked pheromones, she thought with a shrug.
It was a warm evening so she chose a mint and cream flowered chiffon skirt, which skimmed her thighs, and a matching pastel green camisole. She pulled her hair up, curled the loose tendrils around her face, and added dangling crystal earrings.
She looked at herself in the mirror. She didn’t want Rip too distracted by what she wore. Maybe she should grab a light sweater.
Now, which purse? She considered what she needed to bring. She tapped her chin. Breath mints. Check. Chocolate. Of course. How could you solve a crime without a good quality dark chocolate? Spy goggles and walkie-talkies—hopefully he would provide those. Hmmm. That was probably it. The small jeweled clutch it was.
Strappy sandals and she was ready to go.
She knew exactly where Rip lived on Mask Road. She had done some Internet research and driven by in her sperm decision-making days. Rip had a very nice little house in a trendy new development. It was a beige brick and stucco one story with black window frames—very manly. She was curious to see inside.
She parked her car in his driveway and followed the curved walkway to the front door. Before she had a chance to ring the doorbell, Rip opened the door and greeted her with a smile.
Yes, the sweater was a good idea.
Rip was dressed in gray shorts and a navy T-shirt. And muscle. Lots of lovely muscle. She stepped in, brushed his chest (accidentally on purpose), and breathed in his matching musky pheromones. Together they would make a wonderful moldy side dish. She looked at his wavy black hair and the interest in his dark eyes. Side dish? No, definitely a main dish.
A little tinker bell rang in her head. One, she was ten days away from having Jared’s baby. And two, much as their musky scents were compatible, look what happened with Roger. For four years she had wined and dined the dream of settling down with him, and in the end it was a bust. She didn’t want to go through that again. She liked the surefire plan of having a baby with Jared. He hadn’t come back for his sperm, thankfully, so it was a go. She eyed Rip with a twinge of regret. Their gametes would never meet, it was a little sad. But she’d stick with her plan.
“Come on in, Chloe.”
He led her past the living room. Chloe had a quick impression of two leather recliners, bookshelves, and a large television. They continued down the hall to the kitchen.
